Kate Hargrave had painted for more than twenty years, much of it in solitude, the kind of long, undeclared commitment that builds a serious body of work without announcing itself. Her peers had long known the work. The wider art world was only beginning to catch up. It was work I had believed in and followed for years, and as the momentum finally gathered, incoming press, gallery interest, an invitation to a group show she wasn't sure she should take, the question was no longer whether she was ready. It was whether she could navigate what was coming without losing ground.
WHAT THE WORK INVOLVED
Gallery strategy came first, helping her assess an early group show opportunity she was resistant to, which led directly to a solo exhibition offer from the same gallery. From there the work expanded into contract and financial protection: consignment terms, advance structure, a studio subsidy negotiated from the gallery. Press and communications ran alongside, prepping her for a major interview, coaching tone in all gallery correspondence, clearing the path for a critical review. Opening night meant mapping attendees and scripting follow-up language while keeping all inquiries moving through proper channels. Across 15 months of preparation, installation, opening, and post-show uncertainty, the work was also about sustaining her confidence at every stage.
THE RESULT
Milk Teeth opened February 2026 at Karma in New York. Museum directors attended. Institutional program interest followed. Multiple works entered museum collections. The engagement closed the way it began, with the artist's full confidence, confirmed the morning her sales report arrived.
TESTIMONIALS
“Rufus Tureen is the rare artist who thrives on understanding his peers' work and figuring out how to contextualize it. His advocacy just feels natural. I trusted him to handle my social media leading up to a solo show, knowing he would represent me with a clearheaded strategy and a thoughtful voice. It was a relief to have a genuine supporter working in the background so I could focus on my work. The results were exactly as I hoped, with increased engagement and attendance to my show's programming.”

“Rufus is one of the real ones in the art world. He just gets it.”

WHAT THIS KIND OF ADVISORY LOOKS LIKE
I'm a working artist and I co-ran a gallery, Essex Flowers, from 2017 to 2025, so I work with artists as a peer, not from across a desk. I take on a small roster at a time and help build the infrastructure of a career: gallery and collector relationships, press, contracts, communications, and pricing, over the long arc.
